Narrow eyes are a common physical feature that can be used to distinguish one person from another. But who would have thought, it turns out slanted eyes or small greedy could be one indicator of the possibility of certain diseases or medical conditions.
The shape of a person's eyes is determined by the upper and lower eyelids. The angle of the eye close to the nose can be covered by the skin of the upper eyelid. This skin that closes is called the epicanth fold. This fold makes the eyes look more narrow. This is normal in people of Asian descent.
Various Causes of Narrow Eyes
However, in some cases, slanted eyes can be an indication of certain medical conditions. The following are some conditions or diseases that can cause slanted eyes:Down syndrome
Down's syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by physical abnormalities and delayed body growth. Narrow eyes, small mouth with protruding tongue, flat back of the head, only one stroke on the palm of the hand, and weight and length of newborn babies that are less than normal size are common physical features of this syndrome. Down's syndrome occurs due to genetic abnormalities on chromosome 21.
Fetal alcohol syndrome (fetal alcohol
Fetal alcohol syndrome is a physical, mental, and developmental disorder in infants that occurs as a result of the mother consuming alcoholic drinks while pregnant. The effect of alcohol can multiply on the fetus compared to the mother, especially in the first three months of uterine age.
Infants with this syndrome generally have narrow eyes with large folds of skin over the eyes, small upper jaw, small head, and thinner upper lip. Poor limb coordination and shrinking muscle mass. Growth and development of infants with this syndrome tend to be slow, both while still in the womb, and after birth. Infants with alcohol syndrome can also suffer from congenital abnormalities in their organs, including the heart, kidneys, bones, and ears.
Myasthenia gravis (MG)
Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease that attacks nerve and muscle tissue, causing skeletal muscle to function properly. This happens because of interference with the transmission of nerve signals to muscle fibers. One of the clinical signs of MG is the lower eyelid so that the eyes appear narrow. Patients can also be difficult to lift objects or walk, difficult to talk, difficult to swallow and chew, often exhausted, to experience double vision.
Mikroftalmia
Microphthalmia is a disorder of eye development that occurs since the fetus. This disease makes both or one eye become small. Besides being small, usually the eyes have an anatomy (structure) that is also not normal. Sufferers can experience blindness. This condition can be suspected to occur because the baby has an infection or exposure to toxic substances while in the womb. In some cases, microftalmia is associated with fetal alcohol syndrome. Microphthalmia can also be caused by genetic disorders.
Ophthalmoplegia
Ophthalmoplegia is a condition of weakness or paralysis of the eye muscles. People with this disease find it difficult to direct their vision or move their eyelids so that the eyes appear narrow. The muscles of other organs in the patient's body can also become weak. This condition can be inherited (genetic) or arise due to other causes, such as stroke, brain tumor, severe head injury, migraine, thyroid disease, or infection.
Nanophthalmos
Nanophthalmos is a condition in which the size of the eye is very small due to a rare genetic disorder that causes interference with eye development. The word 'nano' itself comes from the Greek which means 'small'. In contrast to the conditions of microftalmia that experience structural abnormalities, the condition of nanoftalmos usually does not experience structural abnormalities.
